Wareham Gatemen Stun League Leaders in Cape Cod Baseball League Upset
A combined pitching effort from Sahil Patel and Jake Schweitzer propelled the bottom-ranked Wareham Gatemen to a shocker against the top-placed Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Wednesday night.

The Wareham Gatemen delivered a significant upset in the Cape Cod Baseball League on Wednesday night, defeating the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 1-0. Entering the contest with the league’s worst record, Wareham overcame the Red Sox, who held the best standing in the competition. The result shifted the league landscape, improving Wareham’s record to 9-17 while dropping Yarmouth-Dennis to 20-5-1.
The match was defined by a dominant pitching performance from the Gatemen. Sahil Patel, representing Ohio State, secured the win by pitching five innings. He allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out four batters, improving his personal record to 1-0. Jake Schweitzer of Louisville closed the game, earning his second save of the season by pitching four innings and recording three strikeouts.
Wareham’s sole run materialised in the top of the fifth inning. Tony Lira, an Arizona player, crossed home plate following a wild pitch. The Red Sox rotation struggled to contain the Gatemen’s offence, with starter Cade O’Leary of Florida State allowing three hits over four innings. Noah Franco of Texas Christian and Rhett Vaughn of Florida State also took the mound for Yarmouth-Dennis, with Vaughn striking out five batters in three innings.
In a separate fixture on the same evening, the Brewster Whitecaps maintained their strong position in the league by defeating the Cotuit Kettleers. Brewster, sitting at 17-7-1, led virtually from the start against the Kettleers, who fell to 9-15-2. The Whitecaps’ bullpen combined for a shutout, scattering three hits and recording six strikeouts.
Brewster established an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning through a single by Jacob Lee of Virginia Commonwealth and a passed ball that scored Jamie Laskofski of William & Mary. The Whitecaps extended their advantage in the seventh inning with an RBI single from Terrence Kiel II of Texas A&M, a sacrifice fly by Michael Torres of Miami, and subsequent runs scored by Laskofski and Jay Abernathy of Tennessee.
