Cowboys finalise Pickens strategy as NFL negotiation window closes
The Dallas Cowboys have passed the July 15 deadline for franchise-tagged players, completing Phase No. 3 of their contract approach for George Pickens.

The Dallas Cowboys have passed the NFL’s self-imposed July 15 deadline, effectively closing the window for long-term contract negotiations with wide receiver George Pickens. By adhering to the league’s timeline, the club has completed Phase No. 3 of its strategy, leaving Pickens on the non-exclusive franchise tag for the 2026 season with a guaranteed salary of $27.3 million.
The decision to forgo a long-term extension was reportedly influenced by off-field conduct issues, including breaches of team rules during a trip to face the Las Vegas Raiders and an incident involving teammate CeeDee Lamb. NFL beat writer Jane Slater noted on Crown Global Media’s Doing Alright podcast that these factors gave the Cowboys pause, prompting them to utilise the tag to let the market validate Pickens’ value rather than committing to a multi-year deal.
Under the non-exclusive tag, the Cowboys retained the right to receive trade compensation from any other team willing to sign Pickens to a long-term contract. However, no tender offers were submitted by other clubs, as the required compensation of a third-round and fifth-round pick proved too steep for potential suitors. This lack of external interest allowed Dallas to maintain control over the receiver without incurring additional assets.
The structure of the tag provides the Cowboys with significant financial flexibility. Even if the team were to apply a second franchise tag in 2027, estimated at $32.8 million, or a third in 2028 at $47.2 million, the average annual value would remain below the top 20 for wide receivers. This approach allows Dallas to manage salary cap implications year-by-year, avoiding the long-term commitments seen in recent record-breaking deals such as those for Jaxon Smith-Njigba or Puka Nacua.
With the negotiation window closed, the Cowboys now hold multiple options for the future. The club can re-tag Pickens in 2027 or 2028, allow him to reach free agency to secure compensatory draft picks, or trade him for assets exceeding the standard compensation. This strategy ensures the team can secure Pickens’ services at below-market rates while retaining the ability to exit the arrangement at any point.
