The 21-year-old’s victory at the Emirates Arena marks a significant milestone for Team Scotland, culminating a performance that saw him recover from a seventh-place standing after the floor exercise to claim the top spot.
Ward’s path to the podium was defined by strategic recovery and high-level execution. After a modest start, he took the lead with a strong performance on the pommel horse, an apparatus routinely considered his strongest. He maintained this advantage through the rings and parallel bars, the latter benefiting from a judicious appeal by the Scottish team that added 0.100 points to his score. A critical vault performance, where he successfully executed three twists after a compromised run-up in the earlier team event, propelled him into the final rotations with a 0.550-point margin.
The victory holds deep personal resonance for Ward, who was inspired as a child to compete for Scotland after watching Dan Keatings win gold in Glasgow twelve years ago. Ward, whose parents Brendan and Lisa moved from East Kilbride to Bury before his birth, described the win as a full-circle moment. He noted that Glasgow and East Kilbride have served as second homes throughout his life, making the achievement at the Emirates Arena particularly significant.
Prior to the final, there was internal optimism within the Scottish camp regarding Ward’s potential.
