Volpe returns to Yankees as Lombard prepares for possible infield shift
Anthony Volpe has been recalled from Triple-A, with George Lombard Jr. welcoming the reunion as the Yankees consider using Volpe at second base.
The New York Yankees have recalled Anthony Volpe from Triple-A during their series against the Colorado Rockies, bringing him back into an infield structure that changed after his demotion.
Volpe was optioned to Triple-A on 4 August, with 21-year-old rookie George Lombard Jr. taking over as the Yankees’ starting shortstop. Lombard had assumed the role after Volpe lost shared duties with Jose Caballero.
Speaking to reporters, Lombard said the reunion was not awkward. He said the players understood the uncertainty of baseball and that he was excited to have Volpe back and to work together.
The Yankees’ final defensive alignment remains unconfirmed. A Yahoo Sports report, republishing a ClutchPoints account, said Volpe had taken reps at second base in the minors and could see time there while Jazz Chisholm Jr. is unavailable.
Such an arrangement would allow Lombard to remain at shortstop. The report also noted that Lombard had shown defensive athleticism but experienced inconsistency in August, while later dealing with a knee issue.
