Virginia Tech Softball Advances in NCAA Tournament with Dominant 6-0 Victory Over South Alabama
Despite being overlooked as a host team, Virginia Tech’s pitching duo and key offensive plays dismantle South Alabama to open their NCAA Tournament campaign.

Virginia Tech softball opened its NCAA Tournament campaign on Friday with a decisive 6-0 victory over South Alabama in the Baton Rouge Regional. The win marks the Hokies’ tenth shutout of the 2026 season, reinforcing their defensive stability as they navigate the postseason. The result serves as a statement performance for a squad that entered the tournament with significant momentum but faced a slight diplomatic snub from the selection committee.
The Hokies entered the regional with an undefeated 6-0 record against SEC opponents and had spent the majority of the second half of the 2026 season ranked inside the top 15. Despite these credentials, Virginia Tech was not selected as a host team for the opening regionals, a decision that appears to have galvanised the roster. The team responded by controlling the tempo of the game from the outset, limiting South Alabama to zero runs throughout the contest.
Offensive production began in the bottom of the third inning when the Hokies loaded the bases. Gaby Mizelle drew a walk, Annika Rohs singled, and Jordan Lynch reached base via an error. Kylie Aldridge capitalised on the opportunity with a grand slam, driving in four runs to give Virginia Tech a 4-0 lead. The play shifted the momentum of the game, providing the pitching staff with a comfortable cushion for the remainder of the match.
Zoe Yaeger extended the lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run, making the score 5-0. She added an RBI single in the sixth inning to seal the 6-0 final tally. The offensive output was supported by a structured approach at the plate, with the Hokies converting key opportunities into runs while maintaining defensive rigidity.
The pitching performance was anchored by Bree Carrico and Avery Layton, who combined for the shutout victory. Carrico started the game, pitching four innings and allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Her performance improved her season record to 15-1. Layton relieved Carrico, pitching three innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out four hitters to earn the save. The combined effort highlighted the depth of Virginia Tech’s rotation as they advance in the tournament.
