Vikings target 2026 playoff return with Murray signing and defensive overhaul
Following the acquisition of Kyler Murray and a draft focused on defensive depth, the Minnesota Vikings are positioning themselves for a competitive 2026 campaign in the NFC North.

The Minnesota Vikings have set their sights on a return to the 2026 NFL playoffs, a move underpinned by the signing of quarterback Kyler Murray and strategic roster adjustments on both sides of the ball. According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the franchise holds a strong chance of reaching the postseason if the offence recovers to 2024 performance levels, supported by a defence that remains among the league’s most formidable.
Murray, who was released by the Arizona Cardinals after seven seasons, signed with the Vikings during the opening days of free agency on a league minimum “prove-it” deal. Head coach Kevin O’Connell is expected to play a pivotal role in revitalising Murray’s career, with the organisation banking on the quarterback’s ability to elevate an offence that struggled to generate consistent scoring in previous seasons.
The team’s playoff aspirations are closely tied to the health of offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw. Darrisaw’s availability has been questionable since he sustained an ACL injury in 2024, leading to a game-to-game status throughout 2025. His absence was a significant factor in the offence’s inability to sustain drives, and his return to full health is viewed as a critical component for any 2026 success.
Defensively, the Vikings have sought to reinforce a unit that finished the previous season with a top-10 ranking under coordinator Brian Flores. The team went 7-2 in games where they scored 20 points or more, highlighting that offensive output, rather than defensive frailty, was the primary barrier to the playoffs. To bolster this strength, Minnesota selected rookie defensive tackle Caleb Banks in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, despite concerns regarding foot injuries that impacted his draft stock. The defence was further augmented by the selection of linebacker Jake Golday in the second round and defensive tackle Domonique Orange in the third round.
Despite these structural improvements, significant uncertainties remain. It is unclear whether Murray can justify the investment on a minimum-salary contract or if he can return to a level of play that stabilises the offence. Similarly, the performance of rookie Caleb Banks is unproven, particularly given his injury history, as the team looks to offset the loss of edge rusher Jonathan Greenard. Additionally, wide receiver Jauan Jennings must rediscover his form to form a potent receiving trio alongside established stars Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. If both the offence and defence can meet these expectations, the Vikings could emerge as a competitive force in the NFC North.
