The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with veteran defender Jamal Adams, the 30-year-old three-time Pro Bowler announced on social media on Monday night. The signing comes on the eve of training camp, adding a high-profile name to a defensive unit coordinated by Brian Flores. Adams confirmed the move on X, posting a message reading "Year 10" alongside the team’s "#skol" hashtag.
Adams brings a history of significant transactions to the organisation. Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley was part of the front office that originally acquired Adams for the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster trade with the New York Jets prior to the 2020 season. This reunion marks a return to a familiar administrative structure for the defender, who has spent parts of his career with the Jets, Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions, and Las Vegas Raiders.
A notable shift in Adams’ career trajectory is his positional conversion. During his tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders last season, he played all 448 of his defensive snaps at linebacker, moving away from his traditional safety role. This versatility aligns with the unconventional personnel deployments often utilised by coordinator Brian Flores, who has previously deployed three safeties on the field simultaneously, utilising players like Josh Metellus in hybrid roles.
The acquisition addresses potential depth concerns within the Vikings’ secondary. The team has been awaiting clarification on the future of longtime safety Harrison Smith, who is contemplating retirement. While Adams has excelled as a blitzer throughout his career, recording 22.5 career sacks, his availability has been compromised by injuries in recent years, and he has not served as a full-time starter since 2023.
Adams’ career statistics reflect a history of high-impact performances despite injury setbacks. Over 102 career games, including 87 starts, he has recorded 546 tackles, 22.5 sacks, four interceptions, and 36 pass deflections. Last season with the Raiders, he appeared in 17 games, totalling 45 tackles, one sack, seven pressures, and one forced fumble.
