Vikings Safety Jamal Adams Ruled Out for Season Following Knee Injury

Minnesota Vikings safety Jamal Adams has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season after sustaining a knee injury during a preseason match against the New York Giants. The injury, which occurred early in the second quarter at MetLife Stadium, requires surgery and effectively ends Adams’ attempt to secure a permanent roster spot with the club.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the severity of the situation, describing himself as “crushed” by the news. While the coaching staff initially sought to wait for definitive imaging scheduled for Sunday before making a final projection, early assessments indicated a significant setback. NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport reported the season-ending status on Sunday, following the initial medical evaluations.

Adams, 30, was signed by the Vikings this offseason after a nine-year career that has seen him play for multiple franchises. Selected sixth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2020 and has also spent time with the Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders. Through his career, Adams has recorded 546 tackles, 22.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, four interceptions, and 36 pass deflections.

The injury occurred during the Vikings’ 13-10 victory over the Giants, a game in which Adams had been working as a hybrid safety and linebacker in training camp. He was in prime position to make the 53-man roster before the incident, but the requirement for surgery removes him from the immediate lineup.

With Adams now unavailable, attention shifts to free-agent safety Harrison Smith. The longtime Vikings star has not officially retired, and speculation suggests a reunion between the two sides could make sense following the loss of Adams. Meanwhile, fifth-round draft pick cornerback Charles Demmings faced a test against the Giants, recording two solo tackles while matching up against high-profile receivers.
