Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced the decision on Tuesday, four days prior to the team’s preseason opener against the New York Giants, with neither player having appeared in the match.
Murray, a two-time Pro Bowler, secured the role after outperforming McCarthy during training camp. McCarthy, who was selected tenth overall in the 2024 draft, struggled to close the gap despite showing incremental progress. The Vikings leadership required Murray to earn the position rather than handing it to him, a process he completed over the first few weeks of camp.
The decision marks a significant shift for the franchise, which finished third in the NFC North last season. O’Connell, known for his ability to elevate quarterback performances, previously worked with Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold. The coaching staff aims to provide a more supportive environment for Murray, contrasting with his tenure in Arizona where he faced significant pressure to carry the offense alone.
Vikings safety Josh Metellus expressed enthusiasm about Murray’s arrival, noting the difficulty opponents face when game-planning against him. Metellus stated that having a player of Murray’s calibre on the roster elevates the entire team as they aim to compete for the top spot in a deep division.
Running back Aaron Jones highlighted Murray’s unique physical attributes, specifically his ability to accelerate his throwing motion. Jones attributed this skill, possibly influenced by Murray’s baseball background, as a distinct advantage that sets him apart from other quarterbacks in the league.
The Vikings intend to simplify the offensive scheme to support Murray, addressing issues that plagued his previous stint with the Arizona Cardinals. In Arizona, Murray was forced to shoulder excessive responsibility, leading to injuries and inconsistent results. The new structure in Minnesota seeks to mitigate these risks and allow Murray to operate more efficiently.
Murray, 29, joins the Vikings after the Cardinals parted ways with him this offseason to pursue a different direction at the position. While he is no longer in the same peak form as his sensational 2020 season, the coaching staff believes he remains within his prime and capable of revitalising his career under O’Connell’s guidance.
