Vikings appoint Murray as starting quarterback ahead of season opener
The Minnesota Vikings have ended their quarterback competition, selecting Kyler Murray to lead the offence for the 2026 season.
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has officially named Kyler Murray as the starting quarterback for the upcoming season, concluding a competition that had pitted the veteran against rookie J.J. McCarthy. The announcement was made on Tuesday afternoon prior to practice, granting Murray a full month of first-team repetitions before the regular season commences on 13 September.
O’Connell, alongside general manager Nolan Teasley, met with both quarterbacks earlier in the day to discuss the outcome of the training camp battle. The coach highlighted Murray’s comfort within the offensive scheme and his comprehensive understanding of the playbook as decisive factors in the selection. O’Connell noted that Murray demonstrated strong timing and rhythm, effectively managing game situations and making prudent decisions to sustain drives.
Murray, who signed a one-year contract for the veteran minimum salary, expressed appreciation for the process. He stated that he did not expect to be handed the job and valued how the competition was handled. With 87 career starts over seven years with the Arizona Cardinals, two Pro Bowl selections, and 3,193 rushing yards, Murray brings significant experience to a Vikings franchise that has cycled through four different starting quarterbacks in its last four season openers.
The decision marks a shift in strategy for the Vikings, who have prioritised clarity and familiarity within a layered offensive system. O’Connell explained that while the competition appeared even in open practices, the value of allowing Murray to maximise his preseason time running the offense outweighed the benefits of splitting turns. The coach emphasised that Murray’s ability to check down and manage the game flow provided a stability the team sought.
McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, will serve as the second-string quarterback. He missed his entire rookie season after tearing the meniscus in his right knee during the first exhibition game last year, a period during which Sam Darnold helped the team achieve 14 wins. Carson Wentz, who started five games last season, is listed as the third-string quarterback, with Max Brosmer rounding out the depth chart. Both Murray and McCarthy are scheduled to play in the first preseason match against the New York Giants on Saturday.
