Nine-year NFL veteran Cooper Rush has joined the Minnesota Vikings' rookie minicamp as a free agent, participating in a tryout session designed to address the team's immediate need for a passer. The 32-year-old former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, who previously played for the Baltimore Ravens, aims to secure a roster spot or gain an invitation to another team's training camp following his release by the Ravens in March.
The Vikings have not selected any first-year quarterbacks in the draft or as undrafted free agents, creating a requirement for experienced arms to throw during the minicamp. Rush will be competing alongside fellow tryout candidate Aidan Bouman, the son of former Vikings quarterback Todd Bouman. This session marks a significant generational gap, with Rush facing rookies who are approximately a decade younger than himself.
Rush enters this evaluation phase with a notable history against the Minnesota franchise. He previously made his first NFL start against the Vikings on Halloween night of the 2021 season, throwing for 325 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning score. During his tenure with the Cowboys, he went 9-5 in 14 starts, serving as a key backup to Dak Prescott and winning his first five professional starts as a substitute in the 2021 season.

Despite this existing group, the organisation requires a passer for the minicamp to ensure adequate practice depth. Rush, who spent eight years with the Dallas Cowboys interrupted by a short stint on the New York Giants' practice squad in 2020, hopes to leverage his experience to parlay this tryout into a future opportunity.
