Veteran defensive end Calais Campbell returns to Baltimore Ravens for 19th season

Veteran defensive end Calais Campbell has agreed to a one-year contract to return to the Baltimore Ravens, marking his 19th season in the NFL. The agreement, confirmed by a source speaking to ESPN's Adam Schefter, sees the 39-year-old, who turns 40 in September, reuniting with the franchise he previously called home from 2020 to 2022.
The primary driver for this institutional move is the structural weakness identified on the interior defensive line following the recent draft. With only Travis Jones, John Jenkins, and CJ Okoye having logged over 100 snaps last season, the club sought to bolster a position that was considered one of its most vulnerable areas. While Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike remains uncertain regarding his recovery from neck surgery, Campbell's return provides immediate depth and experience to the unit.
Campbell's previous tenure with the Ravens included a Pro Bowl selection in 2020 and a total of 11 sacks across two seasons. His decision to return aligns with the club's strategic interest in stabilising the defensive front, a sentiment that was evident as early as November 2024 when the Ravens were close to trading for him while he was with the Miami Dolphins.
The timing of the agreement reflects a calculated approach to governance regarding the team's long-term assets. By finalising the deal in the current week rather than earlier, the Ravens ensured the transaction would not negatively impact their compensatory pick formula for the 2027 draft. Consequently, the franchise is projected to retain four compensatory picks in that future selection.
On the field, Campbell demonstrated significant durability and production during his time with the Arizona Cardinals last season. He appeared in all 17 games, recording 643 snaps, 6.5 sacks, two passes defended, 43 tackles, and nine tackles for loss. His leadership within the defensive line room was noted as a key asset, offering mentorship to both rookie and veteran players.
This re-signing underscores the club's focus on retaining proven talent to address specific roster gaps. Campbell, a first-team All-Pro in 2017 and a six-time Pro Bowl selection, brings a career total of 117 sacks, 282 quarterback hits, and 18 forced fumbles to a team looking to solidify its defensive structure.
