Venezuela opposition candidate Gonzalez urges new elections
Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia demands independent referees and pluralism as Acting President Delcy Rodriguez consolidates power

Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, the 76-year-old former diplomat and opposition candidate, has issued a formal call for fresh presidential elections in Venezuela. Speaking from Spain, Gonzalez outlined a roadmap that demands independent referees, political pluralism, and the presence of both national and international observers to ensure the credibility of any new vote. His statement, delivered via a video message posted on social media on Saturday, signals a continued push for democratic transition despite the significant geopolitical shifts occurring within the country.

Gonzalez explicitly threw his support behind opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was barred from participating in the 2024 presidential race. In his message, Gonzalez expressed solidarity with Machado, stating that democratic forces had united in Panama with the singular goal of achieving Venezuela’s freedom. He described his commitment as ensuring that the mandate for change becomes a reality, framing the upcoming electoral process as a necessary instrument for citizens to effect political change.

Machado responded publicly on the social media platform X, hailing Gonzalez as an example of service and dedication to the homeland. Her message underscored the unity within the opposition ranks, describing a vision of a free and prosperous Venezuela that she claimed was already being reborn. This mutual reinforcement of leadership comes as the opposition seeks to maintain cohesion following the turbulent events of the past year.

The call for new elections follows a dramatic turn of events approximately five months ago, when former President Nicolas Maduro was captured by US forces. Maduro has since been replaced by Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, who has reportedly adopted a more cooperative stance towards Washington. This includes granting improved access to Venezuela’s vast oil supply, a move that has reportedly pleased US President Donald Trump and led to a decision not to take further action to supplant Rodriguez’s leadership.

While official results from the 2024 election declared Maduro the victor, outside observers such as the Carter Center and Freedom House found the electoral process marred by irregularities and lacking credibility. Consequently, the United States and several other nations recognise Gonzalez as the legitimate winner of that vote. The Maduro administration had previously issued an arrest warrant for Gonzalez on charges of criminal association and conspiracy, and Machado is also considered a fugitive by the Venezuelan government.
