Varma’s innings secures MI win over Punjab Kings in IPL 2026

Mumbai Indians secured a five-wicket victory against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2026, driven by an unbeaten 75 from Tilak Varma. Varma, named Player of the Match, scored his 75 off 33 balls, including six fours and six sixes. He anchored the chase with a 61-run partnership off 42 balls with Sherfane Rutherford, who scored 20, followed by an unbeaten 56-run stand with Will Jacks. The victory was completed with one ball remaining in the 20th over.

Following the win, Varma flashed a 'No. 45' hand signal towards the dugout, dedicating the innings to former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma. Sharma, who wore the number 45 jersey during his tenure, responded with a warm hug. The gesture drew attention as the team celebrated the result.

Varma credited his confidence to experience in international cricket, noting that playing in World Cups helped him manage the pressure of finishing games. He acknowledged the challenging conditions, describing the pitch as slow and low, and advised his partner Will Jacks to hold his shape and wait for slower deliveries to counter Punjab’s bowling strategy.

Mumbai Indians are scheduled to play Kolkata Knight Riders next on 20 May at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The result does not alter their elimination status from the IPL 2026 tournament.
