Utah Utes bolster secondary with transfer portal acquisition of Elijah Reed
The 6-foot-3 cornerback joins the Utes from Akron to compete for a starting outside role, aligning with position coach Sharrieff Shah’s strategic emphasis on physical length.

Utah has signed defensive back Elijah Reed from Akron via the transfer portal, adding a significant physical presence to a secondary that underwent substantial reconstruction during the offseason. Reed, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 200 pounds, joins a group of four new acquisitions aimed at restocking the cornerback room.
Position coach Sharrieff Shah has explicitly prioritised height and length in his recruitment strategy, citing the tactical advantages of longer frames in disrupting passing lanes. Reed’s physical profile fits these criteria, offering a distinct advantage in forcing incompletions and creating turnovers, a philosophy Shah outlined during spring practices.
Reed arrives with established experience, having started all 12 games at Akron last season. His statistical record included 47 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, four pass breakups, and two interceptions. His Pro Football Focus grade of 77.3 ranked fifth-highest on the Akron defence, indicating a consistent level of performance prior to his move.
The competition for the starting outside cornerback spot is currently fierce, with Reed vying against Scooby Davis and Rock Caldwell. Davis remains the lone returning full-time starter at the position, while Caldwell, who played primarily at safety in 2025, has returned to the cornerback room full-time this spring.
Reed’s path to Utah is not entirely new to the coaching staff, as Shah and the Utes recruited the Louisville, Kentucky, native out of high school. Reed initially chose to play at Kentucky from 2022 to 2023 before spending two seasons at Akron. He noted that observing the culture and Shah’s coaching style in person made the decision to transfer to Utah straightforward.
While Reed is a key addition, the depth chart remains fluid. USF transfer James Chenault is also being evaluated for a starting role or a spot in the rotation. Shah has indicated that no player’s position is guaranteed until the season opener, maintaining a competitive environment within the defensive backfield.
