USMNT delivers historic 4-1 victory over Paraguay in World Cup opener
The United States men’s national team secured a commanding win at SoFi Stadium, setting a new benchmark for tournament performance under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The United States men’s national team opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a decisive 4-1 victory over Paraguay, delivering a performance that manager Mauricio Pochettino described as nearly perfect. Played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the match marked the first World Cup fixture hosted on US soil since 1994 and served as a definitive statement from the co-hosts.
Folarin Balogun was the standout performer, scoring a brace on his international debut to establish a 3-0 half-time lead. His first goal came from a precise side-foot finish following a deflected pass from Christian Pulisic, while his second was a powerful strike into the top corner. Balogun’s achievement made him the first US player to score more than one goal in a World Cup match since Bert Patenaude in 1930, and the team’s four goals represented their highest tally in a single World Cup match in history.
The USMNT’s midfield trio of Tyler Adams, Malik Tillman, and Weston McKennie provided dominant control, offering slick offensive combinations and relentless defensive pressure. The backline, bolstered by the return of Chris Richards, remained solid for the majority of the contest. The opening goal arrived in the seventh minute when Pulisic’s pass deflected off Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla into the net, providing an early boost to the hosts’ confidence.
Captain Christian Pulisic was substituted at half-time due to a precautionary measure after sustaining a kick to his left calf. Pulisic later told Fox Sports he is hopeful the injury is minor, noting he has experienced similar issues before. Despite his departure, the USMNT maintained their intensity until Paraguay’s Mauricio scored a consolation goal in the 73rd minute. Giovanni Reyna restored the two-goal cushion in stoppage time with a sublime outside-of-the-foot finish.
The match attracted 70,492 spectators, including high-profile attendees such as Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio. While Pochettino cautioned that the team must continue to improve, the result provided a tangible sign of progress following a period of uncertainty that included a group stage exit at the 2024 Copa America. The USMNT now turns its attention to upcoming fixtures against Australia and Türkiye, carrying the momentum from a historic opening day.
