USC suspends Stephens for one game after targeting ejection
The linebacker will miss USC’s 3 October game against Washington after hitting Oregon quarterback Dante Moore, who was taken to hospital for evaluation.
USC has suspended linebacker Desman Stephens II for one game following his targeting ejection in Saturday’s 41–27 loss to Oregon.
Stephens hit quarterback Dante Moore as he attempted to slide in the second quarter. Moore remained on the ground and was taken by ambulance to hospital for evaluation. A team spokesperson said on Saturday night that Moore had movement in all his extremities; the available report provides no later update on his condition.
USC coach Lincoln Riley said Stephens’ actions were unacceptable and did not reflect the programme or the player’s character. Stephens apologised for celebrating while Moore received medical attention, calling his reaction inappropriate and inexcusable.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning described the play as “disgusting” and said it changed the energy of the game. Stephens will serve the suspension at USC’s home game against Washington on 3 October.
