US men put three into US Open quarter-finals as drought remains in reach

Frances Tiafoe, Alex Michelsen and Ben Shelton have moved into the US Open men’s singles quarter-finals, giving the United States three players in the final eight and its strongest showing at a major in decades.
Tiafoe defeated 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), while Michelsen beat Tomas Etcheverry 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 6-4 to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
The all-American quarter-final between Tiafoe and Michelsen guarantees one United States player a place in the semi-finals. Shelton will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
ESPN reported that five American men reached the final 16, the country’s highest total at a major since 1995. The run has revived the possibility of ending a men’s Grand Slam title drought that dates to Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open victory.
Learner Tien could give the US a fourth men’s quarter-finalist if he defeats Karen Khachanov. Taylor Fritz reached the US Open final in 2023, but lost to Jannik Sinner.
