US intensifies strikes on Iran as Trump vows retaliation for soldier deaths

The US military has commenced a new round of strikes against Iran, marking the tenth consecutive night of attacks aimed at degrading Tehran’s capacity to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump has vowed to punish Iran for the recent deaths of three US soldiers, stating that the Islamic Republic would pay “many times over” for the casualties. The President issued specific directives to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Daniel Caine regarding the response, emphasising that every killing of an American service member would be met with severe consequences.

The escalation follows a period of heightened violence in which seventeen US troops have been killed and approximately 430 injured over the five-month conflict. The recent fatalities include one service member who died in Iraq during the controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone, and two soldiers killed in Jordan while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Trump stated that the previous night’s strikes, which he described as hitting Iran “very hard,” were conducted in honour of the fallen soldiers.

Iran’s military and communications sites were targeted in the latest operations. Iranian state media reported hits on several cities, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Bandar Imam Khomeini. President Masoud Pezeshkian declared that Iran was now fighting a “full-scale war” with the United States after claiming its forces had targeted sites in Bahrain, Jordan, and Syria. Despite the collapse of a ceasefire, Tehran indicated that diplomatic messages were still being exchanged between the two sides through intermediaries.

Regional defences were activated as Iranian projectiles entered neighbouring airspace. Jordan’s military shot down three Iranian missiles as sirens sounded across the country. Kuwait’s armed forces intercepted Iranian drones, while Bahrain reported that drones launched by Iran had targeted its air navigation systems, though air traffic remained unaffected. The strategic objectives of the US campaign appear to focus on forcing open the Strait of Hormuz and degrading Iranian military capabilities ahead of more complex operations.

Conflicting reports emerged regarding the impact on maritime infrastructure. Iranian media claimed that two oil tankers exploded while attempting to cross the strait, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps asserting the vessels were using an “unsafe and hazardous southern route.” US Central Command disputed these claims. Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthis announced a ‘maritime embargo’ on Saudi Arabia, further complicating the security landscape in the region.
