The US House of Representatives has approved a war powers resolution seeking to prevent President Donald Trump from continuing military action against Iran without congressional approval.

The measure passed 220–204, with all Democrats and seven Republicans voting in favour. Three Republicans supported such a resolution for the first time, according to Al Jazeera Global News.

Iowa Republican Zach Nunn said sustained combat operations now required congressional authorisation and that he would not support another open-ended war. Florida Republican Brian Mast questioned which military resources Democrats would remove from the region, saying Iran remained a continuing threat to the United States.

The vote was reportedly the third House effort this summer to limit US military action against Iran. The Senate has also approved a similar resolution, but Republican senators reversed course the following day after Trump criticised them.

The resolution has not reached the president and its prospects in the Senate remain uncertain. It would likely face a presidential veto, meaning the vote does not itself end the conflict.

A Congressional Budget Office report estimated the war’s cost at US$38 billion after six months, with costs rising by about US$3 billion a month. The report projected a 0.5 percentage-point increase in inflation during the first three months of 2027.
