US envoys in Moscow ahead of planned Kyiv talks on Ukraine war
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are due to discuss a US proposal in Moscow before a planned visit to Kyiv, as disagreements over territory and security guarantees persist.
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have reportedly arrived in Moscow for talks with Russian officials before a planned visit to Kyiv on Sunday, according to Russian media and flight-tracking data.
The pair are carrying a proposal aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump said on Friday. The contents and status of the proposal have not been independently detailed.
Washington and the Kremlin had not officially confirmed the envoys’ arrival. Flight data showed a US government aircraft landing at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport after travelling from Helsinki.
The planned Kyiv visit would be Witkoff and Kushner’s first to Ukraine, following several trips to Moscow since Trump returned to office. Reports of possible separate meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had not been confirmed.
Previous US-, Ukrainian- and Russian-backed efforts have failed to produce a breakthrough. Major disagreements reportedly remain over territory and security guarantees for Ukraine, while aerial attacks have intensified.
Zelenskyy said Russia carried out overnight strikes on airports in Kyiv and Boryspil ahead of the planned discussions. He also said a separate strike on a civilian building in the Dnipro region killed four people and injured five.
