US envoys arrive in Kyiv after talks with Putin yield no breakthrough

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Kyiv by train from Poland for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following more than three hours of discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The visit is part of US efforts to advance negotiations aimed at ending the Russia–Ukraine war. No breakthrough or specific outcome was announced after the Moscow meeting, despite Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov describing the discussions as constructive, frank and useful.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared for a constructive discussion with the US envoys. He said Kyiv wanted to bring the war to an end, but also required security guarantees and a just, sustainable postwar settlement.
Advisers from the United Kingdom, France and Germany were reportedly also in Kyiv for discussions with the US delegation, according to Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter. Their presence was not independently confirmed in the source material.
The substance of the Kyiv talks and any commitments from the parties remain undisclosed. Previous negotiations have struggled over issues including the future of the Donbas, while Ukraine continues to seek security guarantees from Washington and European allies.
Deutsche Welle reported that the envoys’ arrival marked their first official visit to Ukraine as part of the latest US-led diplomatic effort.
