US Defence commits $400m to first primary scandium mine in NSW
The United States Department of Defence has pledged funding for the Fifield site, aiming to break China’s dominance in scandium processing for aerospace and defence applications.

The United States Department of Defence has announced a $400 million conditional loan commitment to Australian mining firm Sunrise Energy Metals to develop the world’s first primary scandium mine at Fifield, New South Wales. The funding is designated for the Syerston Scandium Project, a facility designed to establish a Western supply chain for scandium, a critical rare earth element essential for aerospace, defence, and telecommunications technologies.
The announcement follows a meeting between US President Donald Trump and mining executives in Washington, where the Pentagon stated the project would “ensure Western alignment from mine to finished product.” This investment aligns with a broader US federal strategy announced by President Trump to invest $3 billion in multiple critical minerals and battery projects, aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese dominance in the sector and boosting national security.
Scandium is valued for its ability to strengthen aluminium, making it flexible and resistant to heat and corrosion, with key applications in defence, aircraft, and 5G/6G telecommunications. Unlike current sources where scandium is typically obtained as a byproduct of other mining operations, the Fifield project will be the first primary mine dedicated to the element. New South Wales holds some of the highest global concentrations of scandium, providing the geological basis for the development.
The push for domestic supply comes after China, which currently dominates the global supply and processing of scandium, restricted its exports for defence products last year. This restriction triggered the US search for alternative suppliers and accelerated diplomatic efforts, including a critical minerals agreement signed in October between President Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. That agreement pledged $1 billion in investments from each nation to counter Chinese influence in the critical minerals market.
Commercial arrangements for the project were solidified last year when Sunrise Energy Metals struck a deal with Lockheed Martin, securing 25 percent of the mine’s scandium output for the first five years of production. The Australian firm stated that the proposed mine would aim to become “a cornerstone of Western scandium supply,” providing a critical metal for critical technologies as the US seeks to diversify its industrial base.
