An Air France flight destined for Detroit was diverted to Montreal on Wednesday after authorities identified a passenger from the Congo who had boarded the aircraft in Paris in error. The incident has drawn scrutiny regarding the enforcement of US entry restrictions implemented to curb the spread of Ebola.
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed the details of the diversion on Thursday, stating that the passenger should not have boarded the plane. A spokesperson for the agency noted that the individual violated entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of Ebola spreading.
The travel restrictions are part of broader measures taken by the United States in response to the World Health Organization’s declaration of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as a public health emergency of international concern.
