US and Iran escalate military exchanges as strikes enter eighth consecutive night
Diplomatic tensions mount as Iranian officials accuse the US of breaching interim deal terms, while infrastructure damage in Iran disrupts water supplies for thousands.

The United States military has conducted air strikes on Iranian targets in Hormozgan and Khuzestan provinces for the eighth consecutive night, marking a sustained escalation in the conflict that began in February. US Central Command stated the operations were designed to degrade Iran’s capacity to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and served as direct retaliation for an attack on a US base in Jordan that killed two American service members.
According to Iranian semi-official news agencies, strikes targeted areas near Sirik and Qeshm Island in Hormozgan province, as well as a location near Shadegan in Khuzestan province. The attacks occurred in the early hours of Sunday, with reports indicating no immediate casualties or damage to residential infrastructure in these specific zones. However, the US military confirmed that the strikes were a response to Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on Friday that resulted in the deaths of two US personnel, with one missing and four others requiring hospitalisation.
In a reciprocal move, Iran’s military announced it had targeted US military assets at bases in Kuwait. A statement from the Iranian army confirmed strikes on an ammunition depot at the Al-Adiri camp and Patriot radar systems at the Ali Al Salem base, citing repeated aggressions by the enemy. This retaliation underscores the expanding geographic scope of the conflict, which initially focused on control of the Strait of Hormuz but has now drawn in regional military installations.
The human and infrastructural cost of the ongoing hostilities continues to rise. Iranian authorities report that at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 wounded in US strikes over the past three weeks. The Iranian embassy in India identified two girls, Sogand Dardmand and Fatemeh Zahra Akbari, among seven civilians killed in a strike on Bandar Khamir on Thursday. State-run news agency IRNA reported the destruction of the Bonji desalination plant, which has cut off water supplies to approximately 10,000 people, alongside damage to a facility on Qeshm Island.
Diplomatic friction has intensified alongside the military exchanges. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi accused the United States of violating the terms of an interim deal, stating that Washington is no longer implementing agreed-upon conditions. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reporter Tohid Asadi noted rising anger and frustration among the Iranian populace regarding the uncertainty of the conflict's duration and the prospects for a diplomatic settlement. Since the war began in February, the US military death toll has risen to 16, with more than 430 service members wounded.
