US and Iran escalate conflict with reciprocal strikes as diplomatic efforts collapse
Washington seeks to punish Tehran for the killing of two service members in Jordan, while Iran’s Supreme Leader warns of severe consequences amid a widening regional crisis.
The United States has launched its eighth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iran, targeting units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in retaliation for an attack on a US airbase in Jordan that killed two American service members. US Central Command confirmed that the overnight operations struck military coastal surveillance, air defence facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites. The Pentagon stated the strikes were intended to punish Tehran for the first US military deaths resulting from direct Iranian fire since the commencement of hostilities.
In response to the US offensive, Iran’s military deployed kamikaze drones against two American bases in Kuwait: Camp Udairi and Ali Al Salem Air Base. Iranian state media outlets, including Fars and Tasnim, reported that US strikes also hit Sirik, a port located on the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran. Kuwait has accused Tehran of targeting civilian sites and vital infrastructure, citing attacks on an oil facility and two power and water plants within its territory.
The conflict has resulted in a total of 16 US military deaths, following the earlier declaration of death for an American Navy pilot who went missing earlier in the month. US Central Command noted that a third soldier remains missing in action following the incident in Jordan, where service members were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.
Diplomatic efforts initiated earlier this year have effectively collapsed with this escalation. Washington and Tehran had previously engaged in discussions under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, warned of "unforgettable lessons" if US attacks continue and accused Washington of repeatedly breaching commitments under the agreement, describing the US president's signature as "worthless and invalid".
While the geopolitical situation intensifies, concurrent sporting events continue in the United States.
