US and Iran escalate conflict as strikes intensify and diplomatic channels collapse
Diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran have effectively collapsed following a fresh wave of military strikes and the invalidation of a recent memorandum of understanding.

The United States has launched a fresh wave of drone, air, and naval strikes on Iranian military targets, marking a significant escalation in hostilities. US Central Command confirmed that operations commenced on Wednesday morning, following a seven-hour campaign conducted overnight. The strikes are part of a sustained military effort aimed at degrading Iranian capabilities used against commercial shipping, with the US military conducting operations for a fourth consecutive day.
In response to the intensified fighting, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps has threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz and potentially other regional oil and gas export channels. The IRGC stated that the strategic waterway would remain shut until the US ceases its "acts of aggression". Tehran further warned that it could close other export routes serving the interests of the United States and its allies, although specific details regarding which additional channels might be affected were not provided.
US President Donald Trump has vowed to target Iran’s energy infrastructure if Tehran does not return to negotiations. Speaking in an interview on Special Report with Bret Baier on Tuesday night, Trump stated he would "save the energy targets for last" but confirmed that power plants and bridges would ultimately be struck. This rhetoric coincides with a policy shift announced by the President, who reversed plans to impose a 20 per cent toll on cargo through the Strait of Hormuz, opting instead to pursue trade and investment deals with Gulf states.
Diplomatic efforts have effectively collapsed, with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi declaring a recent memorandum of understanding with the US invalid. Gharibabadi cited US undermining of commitments as the reason for the rejection. Concurrently, the US Treasury has sanctioned cryptocurrency entities linked to Iran, and a renewed blockade on Iranian ports was imposed on Tuesday evening, preventing vessels from transiting to and from Iranian coastal areas.
Tensions have also spilled over into neighbouring states, with Iran’s state-run broadcaster reporting that the Iranian army carried out attacks on US targets in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Allies of the US in these nations reported intercepting drones and missiles launched from Iran. Meanwhile, reports indicate that a drone landed at Iraq’s Faw port without causing damage. The conflict continues to centre on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane, as both sides prepare for further escalation.
