University of Washington Secures Elite Texas Safety Prospect in 2028 Recruiting Push

The University of Washington has extended an official scholarship offer to James Foster III, a four-star safety from Lancaster High School in Texas, becoming the first of more than three dozen college football programs to make contact. This move marks a significant step in the Huskies' effort to rebuild their defensive unit, specifically targeting the safety position following the departure of senior Alex McLaughlin.
Foster III, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect from the Lone Star State, is currently ranked No. 2 at his position and No. 20 overall for the 2028 recruiting class. According to available data, the recruit had already received 42 offers prior to the start of his junior season, with Washington beating out early impressions from major Power Four programs including SMU, Texas, and Notre Dame to secure the initial bid.
Following the Huskies' offer, Foster III subsequently added scholarships from Arkansas, LSU, and Oregon to his list of potential destinations. The prospect is noted for his versatility, capable of playing both deep safety and in the box, while also contributing significantly on special teams as a gunner. His physicality and ability to deliver impactful hits are expected to provide safety coach Taylor Mays with a player who mirrors his own playing style.
The recruitment strategy is part of a broader institutional plan initiated when coach Jedd Fisch arrived in Seattle in 2024. Under this framework, the university has maintained a streak of recruiting at least one four-star safety annually. This latest acquisition aims to provide immediate depth alongside current sophomore Rylon Dillard-Allen and true freshman Gavin Day, who will gain an additional year of experience before Foster III is expected to enrol.
While the official offer has been extended, Foster III faces a decision timeline extending over a year, meaning his final commitment is not imminent. The Huskies remain well-positioned to continue this trajectory, with eyes also on Gavin Williams from Damien High School in La Verne, California, as a potential target for the 2027 class to sustain the annual four-star safety recruitment goal.
