Union, Grantsville and Manti secure 3A state softball semifinal spots
Defending champions Grantsville and a dominant Union performance lead the field, while Manti and Emery overcome adversity to reach the semis

Six Utah high school softball teams have advanced to the 3A state tournament semifinals following Day 2 of bracket play. Union, Grantsville, Manti, Emery, Logan, and North Sanpete secured their positions in the next round, with Union and defending champions Grantsville delivering particularly decisive performances.
Union defeated No. 2 North Sanpete 13-10 and shut out Richfield 10-0, driven by a standout dual performance from Haylee Moynier. Moynier recorded six hits in seven at-bats with six runs batted in, while also pitching 20 strikeouts across both games. Union coach Evah Taylor noted that while the pitching was effective, the team’s defense required greater focus to match Moynier’s dominance on the mound.
Defending champions Grantsville advanced with a 3-0 victory over Logan and a 7-4 win against Emery. The Cowboys relied heavily on defensive plays and timely hitting, including a crucial home run from sophomore Brooklyne Goodnight. Coach Tony Cloward highlighted the team’s depth, noting that the defensive effort allowed the pitching staff to maintain control throughout the tournament.
Manti reached the semifinals after a challenging day that included a 10-4 loss to North Sanpete followed by back-to-back victories against Morgan and Richfield. The Templars secured their spot with a 14-12 win over Richfield, overcoming a late rally from their opponents. Coach Belinda Osborn praised the team’s resilience, emphasizing a mindset of perseverance after an adrenaline-fueled start to the day.
Emery advanced to the semis with victories over Carbon and Canyon View, defying expectations after a difficult regular season. The Spartans entered the tournament with only five total wins but utilized a tough non-region schedule to build character. Coach Daniel Luke credited the team’s hard work and improved pitching for their ability to rally and secure their semifinal berth.
Logan and North Sanpete also advanced, with Logan defeating Canyon View 8-1 behind strong pitching from Cambree Cooper. North Sanpete, despite their loss to Union, had previously defeated Manti 10-4. The remaining four teams will now compete for a spot in the state championship series.
