UNC football secures fifth 2027 class commitment amid Belichick rebuild
The University of North Carolina has added a three-star prospect to its early recruiting class as head coach Bill Belichick seeks to stabilise the programme following a difficult 2025 season.

The University of North Carolina football program has secured a verbal commitment from Trey Johnson, a three-star defensive back prospect from the class of 2027. Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound player from Texas, pledged his allegiance to the Tar Heels on Friday, marking the fifth recruit for UNC’s 2027 class.
The commitment arrives during the second season of head coach Bill Belichick’s tenure, following a challenging 2025 season that the programme has described as bad. With the 2026 season still months away, the administration is focusing on rebuilding efforts and demonstrating future potential through strategic recruiting.
Johnson selected UNC over offers from Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, and Texas Tech. According to On3 rankings, he is rated No. 1,265 nationally, No. 121 among defensive backs, and No. 156 in the state of Texas. His decision was influenced by ongoing communication with coaches and the programme’s strategic plans for development.
Notably, Johnson has not yet taken an official or unofficial visit to the UNC campus. The source material indicates that the communication from the coaching staff and the outlined plans to build up the program were sufficient to convince the prospect to commit.
This early addition to the roster underscores the programme’s intent to establish a foundation for the future. As the Tar Heels look to rebound from their previous season's performance, securing early commitments remains a key component of the rebuilding strategy under Belichick’s leadership.
