UMass Minutemen end 16-game FBS losing streak with 37-21 victory over Rutgers
The Minutemen, who finished the previous season with a 0-12 record, dominated the Scarlet Knights on the road, capping a performance defined by quarterback Pop Watson’s efficiency and a defensive unit that won the turnover battle 4-0.
The UMass Minutemen secured a 37-21 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a Week 1 college football match, snapping a 16-game losing streak against FBS opponents. Entering the contest as 29.5-point underdogs following a 0-12 season, UMass controlled the pace of the game, scoring on each of its first four drives and avoiding a punt until the final 100 seconds of the third quarter.
The result marks a significant shift for a program that last defeated an FBS team on 28 October 2023, when it beat Army 21-14. While Rutgers is not considered a top-25 powerhouse, the margin of victory and the statistical dominance suggest the outcome was not merely a fluke, but a display of sustained offensive and defensive execution.
Quarterback Pop Watson, a transfer from Virginia Tech where he spent three seasons as a non-starter, was the focal point of the UMass attack. Watson completed 18 of 21 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns, while also contributing 40 rushing yards. His performance highlighted the potential of the transfer portal to reshape a team’s competitive standing, particularly within the MAC conference.
Defensively, the Minutemen showed marked improvement over the previous season, when they allowed 38.6 points per game, ranking 136th in the country. Against the Big Ten offensive line, the UMass defence recorded five sacks and seven tackles for loss. The unit won the turnover battle 4-0, with three of those turnovers being interceptions of Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan.
Rutgers struggled to gain momentum, averaging just 1.2 yards per rushing attempt. A critical defensive stand occurred with under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, when UMass forced a turnover on downs on a fourth-and-one situation from the 11-yard line. This play effectively extinguished any hope of a Rutgers comeback, although KJ Duff did manage to test the UMass secondary on several occasions.
While it remains to be seen whether UMass can maintain this level of performance throughout the season, the victory offers a strong foundation for the Minutemen. The combination of Watson’s dual-threat capability and a defensive unit that finally looked competitive against an FBS opponent suggests the team may be a tougher out than its preseason odds indicated.
