Ukraine strikes key Russian rocket facility in Samara with Flamingo missiles
The attack using ground-launched FP-5 cruise missiles targets electronics production at the facility, potentially impacting Russia’s Soyuz-2 launch cadence amid existing supply shortfalls.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Saturday that Ukrainian forces struck the Progress Rocket Space Center in the Samara region of Russia using ground-launched FP-5 "Flamingo" cruise missiles. The facility, a key enterprise within the state space corporation Roscosmos, is Russia’s primary manufacturer of rockets and a critical node in its military and civilian space infrastructure.
Zelenskyy stated on the social media platform X that the strike targeted electronics production capabilities at the site. "In Russia’s Samara region, one of the key enterprises within Roscosmos—the Progress Center, which was involved, among other things, in electronics production–was hit," he said. "Flamingo missiles were used. A good achievement." Open-source reports suggest the missile struck a building housing a clean room for avionics, though the extent of damage to specific facilities at the sprawling complex remained unverified at the time of reporting.
The Progress Centre assembles the Soyuz-2 and Soyuz-5 rockets and produces military satellites. The Soyuz-2 is the principal vehicle for Russia’s human spacecraft launches to the International Space Station and serves as the workhorse for the country’s broader launch portfolio. Of more than 120 Russian rocket launches since 2020, over 85 per cent have involved the Soyuz-2 family, which has a lift capacity of approximately 8 metric tons to low-Earth orbit.
The attack utilises the FP-5 "Flamingo" missile, developed by the Ukraine-based defence group Fire Point. The weapon has a range of several thousand kilometres and has previously been deployed against energy infrastructure and military production facilities. Samara, the largest city in the Samara Oblast, is located approximately 900 km from the Ukrainian border.
Disruption to the facility could have significant implications for Russia’s space programme, which is already facing production constraints. Russian Space Web reported that demand for Soyuz rockets was 30 to 50 per cent higher than production capacity for the period from 2027 to 2030. As the older Proton booster ages out and the newer Angara rockets struggle to reach a steady launch cadence, the Soyuz-2 remains the country’s key launch vehicle.
While it is unlikely Ukraine sought to target civilian space infrastructure directly, the civil and military space efforts in Russia are closely aligned. Any lasting damage to Soyuz rocket production capabilities would be crippling for Moscow’s space operations, compounding existing challenges in maintaining launch frequency.
