Ukraine reports major Russian assault on energy infrastructure
Strikes hit 11 regions overnight, disrupting electricity and damaging homes, businesses and railways. Local authorities reported at least six deaths and 33 injuries.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi described the overnight strikes as the largest attack on the country’s energy infrastructure since spring. The attacks hit Kyiv and surrounding areas among 11 regions, according to Ukrainian officials.
Local authorities reported at least six people killed and 33 injured, including a child in the Kyiv region. Kyiv’s mayor reported three deaths in the capital, but it was unclear whether that figure included the child. Officials also reported deaths in Sumy and Mykolaiv.
The strikes disrupted power supplies and damaged residential buildings, infrastructure, businesses and railways, Koretskyi said. DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy firm, said power had been restored to 8,000 homes.
Ukraine’s energy ministry said some households in several regions remained without power on Wednesday. Grid operator Ukrenergo advised residents to avoid using powerful appliances between 10:00 and 16:00 local time while electricity supplies were lower than usual.
Russia’s defence ministry said the Trypilska power station was among its targets. Ukrainian officials had not confirmed that claim.
Ukraine has faced repeated Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure since summer, officials said. The assaults on the grid have occurred each winter since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.
