Ukraine parliament accepts Svyrydenko’s resignation amid strategic cabinet reshuffle

Ukraine’s parliament has formally accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, concluding a political transition initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the weekend. The move marks a significant adjustment to Kyiv’s executive leadership as the government seeks to align its administrative structure with a newly defined political strategy.

In her farewell address, Svyrydenko acknowledged the demands of the past year, stating that every day had required difficult decisions and decisive action. She expressed gratitude for the trust and support received during her tenure, emphasising her belief that results remained the most critical metric of governance.

Zelenskyy announced the cabinet reshuffle via social media platform X, noting that discussions with Svyrydenko had led to the conclusion that changes were necessary. He confirmed that she had been offered the opportunity to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner, though he did not specify the exact nature of this new role or name a successor.

Ukrainian media have speculated that Svyrydenko may be appointed as the next ambassador to the United States, a position that would leverage her previous success as economy minister in securing a mineral agreement with Washington. This agreement was widely viewed as a mechanism to tie US strategic interests to Ukraine’s security. However, these reports remain unconfirmed.

The identity of Svyrydenko’s successor is also yet to be officially determined. The Kyiv Independent, citing unnamed sources, reported that Serhii Koretskyi, the chief executive of Naftogaz, Ukraine’s national oil and gas company, could be the candidate to replace her. Zelenskyy has not yet validated these reports.

Amidst the leadership changes, Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka sought to reassure international partners that Ukraine’s strategic objectives remain unchanged. Speaking in Brussels ahead of the formal opening of the second chapter of EU accession negotiations, which covers external relations, Kachka affirmed that the government reshuffle would not impact the country’s priority of European Union integration.

Kachka described EU integration as an unconditional priority for the Ukrainian government, essential for ensuring the continuity of negotiations and the reform process. Svyrydenko, who was appointed prime minister in July 2025 at the age of 39, leaves office after a brief tenure defined by high-stakes diplomatic and economic negotiations.
