UK government to train domestic AI security systems on Ukrainian battlefield data
A first-of-its-kind agreement grants British firms access to four years of operational military records to enhance fibre-optic sensor networks at sensitive sites.

The UK government has struck a deal with Ukraine to utilise four years of battlefield data from the Avengers AI lab to train artificial intelligence models for domestic security. The agreement, described as the first of its kind in the UK, will allow private companies to access deep operational datasets, including drone records, strike mission footage, and flight profiles, via a secure platform subject to Ministry of Defence approval.
The initiative is a direct response to the June 2025 breach of RAF Brize Norton by the activist group Palestine Action, which defaced two military aircraft before escaping. The government intends to pilot the technology at an unnamed UK defence site, using AI-optimised sensors in buried fibre-optic cables to detect movement from protesters or hostile states. If the pilot proves workable, the scheme could be expanded to airports, prisons, railways, and energy infrastructure.
Pilot projects have been approved with three British AI companies: Sintela, Mind Foundry, and Skyral. Sintela, a Bristol-based firm specialising in fibre-optic sensors, recently secured a $35m (£26m) contract with the US administration for border surveillance. The partnership provides access to a data cache that is significantly deeper than the open-source data previously used to train AI models outside Ukraine.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Defence Secretary Wes Streeting have publicly endorsed the deal as a means to accelerate defence innovation. Burnham stated that the move would allow British companies to combine their AI expertise with Ukraine’s battlefield data to strengthen national security and protect critical infrastructure. Streeting added that combining UK scientific capability with Ukraine’s unique battlefield experience would strengthen both nations’ defence and security.
However, the initiative faces scrutiny regarding its technical novelty. Steven Murdoch, a professor of computer science at University College London, noted that technologies to detect movement from sensors in fibre-optic cables have been in use for decades. He expressed uncertainty over whether the Ukrainian data would significantly refine existing capabilities, though he acknowledged that data related to new threats, such as drones, could be valuable for Western European countries in the short to medium term.
