UFC president Dana White faces censure from Matt Brown over comments on White House shooting

Matt Brown has issued a direct criticism of UFC president Dana White regarding the latter's description of the recent shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Brown, a legendary figure in mixed martial arts, labelled White's characterisation of the event as "awesome" as tone-deaf and disrespectful to the victims. White, who was present during the attack targeting US President Donald Trump, stated he did not take cover and found the chaotic experience thrilling.

Brown, who survived a mass shooting at a concert in 2004, stated he is flabbergasted by White's response and finds it impossible to view such a traumatic event as cool. The 2004 incident involved a fatal shooting at a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio, where guitarist Darrell Abbott was murdered by assailant Nathan Gale. Brown witnessed the proceedings in their entirety and considers himself qualified to critique White's reaction given his own experience with mass violence.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Brown explained that while he does not usually criticise White's promotional remarks, this specific comment crossed a line. He noted that one cannot describe a situation where a person has been shot, even if they survive, as anything other than a traumatic experience. Brown argued that there are simple, appropriate things to say in such circumstances, and White's choice of words was the most odd thing he has ever heard regarding the incident.

The controversy arises against a backdrop of increased scrutiny following the attack. Investigators have confirmed that the gunman, Cole Allen, intended to assassinate President Trump and several top officials. Security for the White House is now under heightened review following the breach where an officer was injured but saved by a bulletproof vest. The attacker was arrested and charged with attempting to assassinate the President.
