UEFA sanctions Fenerbahce players after Lyon brawl
Matteo Guendouzi receives a four-match suspension and €50,000 fine, while Mason Greenwood is handed a suspended one-match ban.
UEFA has suspended and fined Fenerbahce players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood over their involvement in a post-match brawl with Lyon players and coaching staff.
The disciplinary action follows Fenerbahce’s 2-1 Champions League playoff victory in France last month. The result sent the Turkish side through 3-2 on aggregate, before chaotic scenes broke out after the final whistle.
UEFA said Guendouzi had been suspended for four UEFA club competition matches for insulting people at the match, provoking spectators and violating basic rules of decent conduct. Two of the matches are subject to a one-year probationary period.
Guendouzi was also fined €50,000. UEFA said the former Marseille midfielder had, among other conduct, gestured with his middle finger towards Lyon supporters and engaged in provocations that led to a scuffle.
Greenwood, who also previously played for Marseille, received a one-match suspended ban and a €30,000 fine for violating the basic rules of decent conduct. UEFA did not specify the length or conditions of the suspended ban.
