Typhoon 6 leaves 16 injured in Okinawa as storm impacts spread
Strong winds in Uruma and Naha caused 16 people to be blown over, while residential roofs sustained damage, according to local authorities.

Okinawa Prefecture has confirmed that 16 individuals sustained minor injuries following the arrival of Typhoon 6. According to data compiled by the prefectural government, the injuries were recorded by 7:00 am on June 2, 2026. The incidents occurred primarily in Uruma and Naha, where strong winds caused pedestrians to lose their balance and fall.
In addition to personal injuries, the storm has caused structural damage to the region. Authorities reported that residential roofs have been damaged by the high winds associated with the typhoon. The prefecture continues to monitor the situation as the weather system moves through the area.
The typhoon’s approach was forecast to bring violent winds and heavy rain to Okinawa and the Amami Islands between May 1 and 2, 2026. Meteorological expectations indicated that the storm system would subsequently affect regions extending from Kyushu through to the Kanto and Chubu areas.
The broader impact of Typhoon 6 has already disrupted transportation networks across Japan. Over 330 flights were cancelled, with the majority centred on Kyushu. There are also potential suspensions of Shinkansen services as railway operators respond to the severe weather conditions.
In response to the approaching disaster, some local governments have adopted new disaster weather information standards. These updated protocols include revised criteria for the closure of schools and kindergartens, aiming to improve public safety measures during extreme weather events.
