Typhoon 6 forces cancellation of over 290 flights across Japan
NHK News Japan reports major airlines have suspended more than 290 services between 31 May and 2 June, citing forecast violent winds and heavy rain impacting the Okinawa and Amami Islands.

Major domestic airlines in Japan have cancelled more than 290 flights between 31 May and 2 June 2026 due to the impact of Typhoon 6, according to data reported by NHK News Japan. The disruptions primarily affect routes to and from Okinawa, with the figures confirmed as of 10:00 am local time on 31 May.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has forecast that Typhoon 6 will approach the Okinawa and Amami Islands, bringing violent winds and heavy rain to the region. These conditions have necessitated widespread operational suspensions by major domestic carriers to ensure passenger safety and infrastructure integrity.
The current aviation disruption follows earlier weather warnings issued by authorities. On 29 May, previous reporting indicated concerns regarding heavy rain extending from the Kyushu region through to the Kanto and Chubu areas. By 30 May, severe heat was expected to persist in other parts of the country, with widespread areas predicted to experience temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
NHK News Japan highlighted the specific impact on Okinawa-bound and departing services, noting that the cancellations are scheduled to continue through 2 June. The agency also noted concurrent seismic activity, reporting a magnitude 3 earthquake near Okinawa’s Oshima Island, although no tsunami warnings were issued.
While the immediate focus remains on the aviation sector, the broader meteorological context suggests a complex weather pattern affecting multiple regions. The Japan Meteorological Agency continues to monitor the typhoon’s trajectory and intensity, with international observers noting the domestic focus of these reports from NHK.
