Tuchel’s bold World Cup gamble: Palmer and Foden omitted as England squad takes shape
High-profile exclusions of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Harry Maguire contrast with the inclusion of Jordan Henderson and Saudi-based Ivan Toney in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man roster.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has announced his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making a series of decisive and controversial selections that prioritise tactical clarity over recent high-profile form. The announcement, released on Friday, excludes several key figures from the Euro 2024 final run, including Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw.
Tuchel, who was appointed to end England’s 60-year wait for a major international trophy, described the selection process as "painfully difficult." He stated that he personally contacted excluded players to demonstrate appreciation and respect for their contributions, acknowledging the emotional weight of the decisions. The manager indicated that finalising the roster provides a necessary edge and clarity for the upcoming campaign.
The exclusions have drawn immediate criticism from within the squad. Harry Maguire expressed shock and disappointment on social media, stating he felt confident he could have played a major part following his recent season. Maguire’s Manchester United teammate Luke Shaw was also overlooked. Tuchel has nonetheless selected centre-back John Stones, taking a calculated risk on the defender despite his limited involvement at Manchester City due to injuries.
In a departure from expected norms, veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson has been selected over Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. Additionally, Ivan Toney has been included as a surprise selection despite playing for Saudi club Al-Ahli, having featured only two minutes of international football since his move in 2024. Conversely, Morgan Gibbs-White and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were omitted despite being among the highest-scoring Englishmen in the Premier League this season.
The final squad comprises goalkeepers Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, and James Trafford. The defensive line features Reece James, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, John Stones, Nico O’Reilly, Ezri Konsa, Jarell Quansah, and Djed Spence. Midfield selections include Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze. The forward line is anchored by Harry Kane, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Gordon.
England’s World Cup campaign begins against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, followed by matches against Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27. Tuchel’s bold calls will be subject to intense scrutiny as the Three Lions seek to translate their squad choices into tournament success.
