Tuchel retains FA backing as England’s World Cup campaign ends in Atlanta
England manager Thomas Tuchel has secured the full support of the Football Association following a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina, despite intense scrutiny over his decision to adopt a passive strategy after taking the lead.
England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign concluded at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday with a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina, ending their hopes of reaching the final. Anthony Gordon gave England a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute, but the side surrendered the advantage in the closing stages of the match. Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martinez scored the winner in the 92nd minute, with both goals assisted by Lionel Messi.
The result marks a historic milestone for Argentina, who become the first team to score multiple winning goals in second-half stoppage time in a single World Cup. They will advance to the final against Spain, marking the first World Cup final between the top-ranked teams in the FIFA rankings since the system was introduced in 1992.
England manager Thomas Tuchel faced heavy criticism from former players for his tactical approach after taking the lead. Tuchel made three defensive substitutions, introducing Ezri Konsa in the 72nd minute, followed by Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly. Former England captain Wayne Rooney described the team as having “crumbled” and criticised Tuchel’s tactics as “too passive,” while Premier League winner Chris Sutton labelled the approach a “coaching catastrophe.”
England captain Harry Kane admitted that trying to hold on to the lead at this level “is not enough,” expressing disappointment that the team could not match Argentina man-for-man in the second half. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez noted that England changed their game plan by sending on extra defenders, which allowed Argentina to find their flow and exploit space to free up Messi.
Despite the defeat and the subsequent backlash, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham issued a statement confirming that Tuchel retains the full backing of the Football Association. The governing body praised the squad and coaching staff, confirming that Tuchel will continue in his role to lead the team into the Euro 2028 finals. In his post-match press conference, Tuchel stated he had “no regrets” and believed the team gave everything, though he declined to analyse the full tournament immediately.
