‘United States of the Middle East?’: Trump posts US flag covering Iran
White House silence as experts warn social media message undermines delicate diplomacy

US President Donald Trump posted a photograph on Truth Social depicting the American flag covering a map of Iran, accompanied by the caption “United States of the Middle East?”. The image was shared on Saturday as negotiations for a lasting ceasefire in the war launched by the United States and Israel on 28 February appeared to be reaching a critical juncture. The post has drawn sharp criticism from experts who argue it undermines the delicate diplomacy required to finalise a deal, while simultaneously contradicting official White House statements that the US does not seek prolonged occupation or outright regime change in Tehran.

Vali Nasr, a professor of international affairs and Middle East studies at Johns Hopkins University, described the post as “grotesque behaviour” that risks uniting Iranians in defence of their country. Nasr noted that the message runs counter to previous statements from the administration, including Trump’s threat in early April that an “entire civilisation will die” if Iran did not agree to a deal. That threat led to a pause in fighting which has held since, despite a handful of flare-ups, while the US maintains a blockade on Iranian ports and Tehran effectively closes the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the inflammatory social media activity, both US and Iranian officials indicated on Saturday that a new agreement may be within reach. Trump told CBS News that both sides were “getting a lot closer” to a resolution. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that an update could be forthcoming, while Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that the two sides were working to finalise a memorandum of understanding and that their opinions had been converging.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the Truth Social post. However, significant hurdles remain in the negotiations. No official announcements have been made regarding key sticking points in the standoff, specifically the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, the fate of its highly enriched uranium stockpile, and the determination of future influence over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The incident occurs against the backdrop of a broader shift in the Trump administration’s foreign policy, characterised by efforts to expand US influence abroad. The administration has adopted the term “Donroe Doctrine”, referencing the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, to diminish European influence in the Western Hemisphere. This approach has included the military abduction of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, continued threats against Cuba, and vows to take control of Greenland, the semi-autonomous Danish territory. On the same day as the Iran post, Trump also shared an image of his face peering over a mountain range in Greenland.
