US President Donald Trump has questioned the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, joking that the deal could be revisited using presidential power.
Speaking in Dallas, Trump said he did not understand the February 2025 trade and described it as “not good”. He also said the Mavericks were a “big” team and hoped they would be successful.
The remarks, reported by Yahoo Sports, were framed as a joke. There is no evidence of an official review, planned intervention or move to return Doncic to Dallas.
Doncic remains with the Lakers under a short-term contract extension, according to the report, and could potentially enter free agency as early as 2028, depending on his contract.
The Mavericks have since added Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving and appointed a new front office led by Masai Ujiri, while the organisation has continued to build around its post-Doncic direction.
