Trump Claims Russia and Ukraine Agreed to Halt Energy Strikes
Ukraine says any halt depends on Russian compliance and lasting guarantees, while Moscow has offered no immediate response.
US President Donald Trump has claimed Russia and Ukraine agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy targets, but the assertion remains unsubstantiated and has not been confirmed by Moscow.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had proposed an arrangement to protect critical infrastructure as winter approaches. He said Ukraine would be prepared to halt its own strikes if partners could ensure Russia genuinely stopped attacking Ukraine’s electricity system, energy facilities, critical infrastructure and food supply routes.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was not convinced Russia would honour such an agreement and called for specific details from its partners. He also said any deal would need to be lasting rather than a temporary measure.
The Kremlin had not immediately commented on Trump’s claim. The scope, timing and enforcement arrangements for any potential halt remain unclear.
Russia and Ukraine have continued attacks on energy infrastructure during the war. Ukraine has used long-range drones against Russian refinery and petroleum infrastructure, while Russia has frequently targeted Ukrainian energy facilities, particularly ahead of winter. US-brokered negotiations have largely stagnated, although both sides have indicated some willingness to continue talks.
