US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will have a private dinner at the White House with Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei. The dinner was planned for Sunday evening; the source report does not confirm it has taken place.
US media, including Axios, reported that it would be the first one-on-one meeting between the two. The meeting follows months of public disagreement over AI safety and the pace of development.
Trump has argued that slowing US AI development through regulation could give China an advantage. He acknowledged Amodei’s concerns about risks from moving too quickly, but said maintaining the US technological lead was more important. His estimate that the US is about a year and a half ahead of China is his own assessment.
The dinner comes after a federal appeals court upheld the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic as a “supply chain risk”, according to Al Jazeera. The designation bars the US military from using the company’s models.
Al Jazeera reported that the Trump administration sanctioned Anthropic after it refused to allow its tools to be used for fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance. Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are due to meet AI executives on Tuesday, the report said.
