Transfer window closes for Premier League and EFL clubs
The summer transfer window for English top-flight and second-tier clubs concluded on Tuesday, marked by high-value signings for Manchester City and Liverpool, while Scottish and women’s leagues retain until Thursday.
The summer transfer window for Premier League and English Football League (EFL) clubs closed at 23:00 BST on Tuesday, 1 September. The deadline saw a flurry of activity, with several high-profile permanent transfers and loans finalised across the English football pyramid.
Manchester City secured the most expensive move of the day, acquiring Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for £65m. The signing was completed at 21:00 BST, shortly before the window shut. Liverpool also made a significant investment, signing Lucca Brughmans from Belgian club Genk for £30m at 19:00 BST.
Other notable permanent transfers included Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who moved from Lille to Newcastle for £51.4m, and Ibrahim Mbaye, who joined Aston Villa from Paris St-Germain for £47m. Aston Villa further bolstered their squad by signing Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton for £29m.
Loan moves were also prominent, with Mykhailo Mudryk moving from Chelsea to Tottenham, and Hugo Larsson joining Fulham from Eintracht Frankfurt. Kevin Danso moved on loan from Tottenham to Sunderland, while Honest Ahanor joined Crystal Palace on loan from Atalanta.
The transfer of Iliman Ndiaye had wider implications for Everton, as the sale was a prerequisite for their pursuit of Folarin Balogun from Monaco. Despite the Ndiaye deal being completed, the Balogun transfer subsequently stalled, highlighting the complex dependencies within deadline-day negotiations.
While the English window has closed, the Scottish Premiership and Women’s Super League (WSL) clubs have until Thursday to complete their moves. The Scottish Premiership deadline is set for 17:00 BST, while the WSL window remains open until 23:00 BST.
