A 13-year-old boy has died and another child was seriously injured following the partial collapse of the Arbol Gordo fountain in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca province, Spain. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday, casting a sombre note over local celebrations of the Spanish national team’s 2026 World Cup victory.
Emergency services received reports of the collapse at approximately 12:30 am local time. According to regional authorities, the upper section of the monument broke loose while numerous people had climbed onto the structure to mark the occasion. The weight of the crowd appears to have contributed to the structural failure, striking several individuals below.
The local town hall issued a statement expressing condolences to the victim’s family and friends. In a message posted on social media platform X, Ciudad Rodrigo’s municipal administration described the event as a tragedy that marred what should have been a celebration of the national team’s second World Cup title, their first since 2010.
The injured child, believed to be another youth, remains in serious condition with a broken leg. Rescue teams attended the scene in the walled medieval city, which has a population of approximately 12,000 residents, to assist those affected by the accident.
