Trackhouse Eyes A Homegrown American MotoGP Star
Team owner Justin Marks targets homegrown champion as sport’s new owner seeks North American expansion

Trackhouse Racing team owner Justin Marks has identified a significant demographic opportunity within the United States, estimating that nearly all of the country’s 350 to 400 million residents remain unaware of MotoGP. Speaking on the sidelines of the Silverstone Grand Prix weekend, Marks stated that the next American world champion is likely only three years old, underscoring the long-term nature of the team’s ambition to secure a homegrown rider capable of winning races.

The team’s strategic direction has shifted following Liberty Media’s acquisition of the MotoGP championship. Marks admitted that when Trackhouse acquired the RNF-Aprilia entry at the end of 2023, he had no visibility on the impending ownership change. However, the team has since recalibrated its approach to align with Liberty Media’s broader North American expansion strategy, moving away from an independent US push to a coordinated partnership model.

Marks has communicated directly to Liberty Media that he intends for Trackhouse to serve as its primary partner in North America. While he noted that discussions are ongoing and the specific framework is still being finalised, he expressed confidence that the team is gaining a clearer understanding of how the new owner plans to market the sport to American audiences.

The immediate focus involves utilising the team’s platform to introduce the sport to a new demographic, but the ultimate objective remains competitive success on the grid. Marks cited 2006 world champion Nicky Hayden as his model, describing the achievement of winning a MotoGP race with an American rider as the team’s “holy grail.”

This ambition is rooted in Marks’ personal history as a fan of Hayden, shaping the team’s ceiling beyond mere viewership growth. By positioning itself as a conduit for Liberty Media’s US strategy, Trackhouse aims to replicate Hayden’s success while simultaneously addressing the vast awareness deficit in the American market.
