Tottenham secure Mudryk on loan from Chelsea with option to buy
The Ukraine international joins Spurs on a season-long deal, reuniting with manager Roberto De Zerbi after a doping ban was resolved earlier this year.
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on a season-long loan with an option to buy. The 25-year-old Ukraine international will wear the number 27 shirt at the club, marking a significant move for a player who has not featured in a competitive match since November 2024.
Mudryk’s absence from the pitch was the result of a doping ban involving a low concentration of meldonium. The suspension, originally set at four years, was resolved in July following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The resolution came amid changes to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) procedures, which the Football Association noted would have meant no anti-doping rule violations were reported had the sample been collected under current rules.
The transfer represents a reunion for Mudryk and Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who previously coached the winger at Shakhtar Donetsk. De Zerbi, who has described Mudryk as an exciting attacking talent with the quality to change a game, expressed happiness at the player’s choice to join the squad. The manager stated that he would demand a lot from Mudryk while helping him find the best version of himself.
Mudryk’s move to north London follows a high-profile arrival at Chelsea in January 2023, where the Blues secured his services for £88.5m, beating Arsenal to the signing. Despite the initial fanfare, the winger struggled to live up to the price tag at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange indicated that the club believes Mudryk has the attributes to make a real contribution and is excited to see his development within their environment.
Mudryk himself expressed excitement about the opportunity, citing his desire to bring speed and creativity to both offensive and defensive areas. He noted the strength of the current squad and looked forward to sharing special moments with his new teammates.
The signing is part of a broader reshuffle for Tottenham, as Chelsea team-mate Tosin is also expected to join the club on a permanent deal. The defender is viewed as a replacement for Kevin Danso, who moved to Sunderland on a season-long loan.
