Tottenham Hotspur have finalised the acquisition of 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder Matheus Fernandes from West Ham United for a fee approaching €100 million. De Zerbi’s preference for Fernandes is rooted in the player’s ability to combine ball-winning capabilities with technical possession play. The coach cited Fernandes’ fit for a vertical possession system as the primary driver for the deal, noting that the midfielder’s game intelligence and calmness under pressure align with the club’s new philosophical direction. This approach contrasts with the profile of Palhinha, who is viewed as a defensive specialist with limited utility in possession-based build-up play.
Statistical data from the 2025/26 season supports the club’s assessment of Fernandes’ elite status. The midfielder ranked third in the Premier League for duels won, with 180 successes, and third for tackles, recording 67. He also placed fourth for accurate switches of play with 23 and covered 279.3 kilometres, ranking ninth among midfielders. These metrics attracted interest from other top-tier clubs, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, prior to the Tottenham deal.
Fernandes’ current profile is the result of a tactical evolution under former Southampton coach Russell Martin, who transitioned him from an attacking No. 10 to a box-to-box number eight. This role change enhanced his defensive contributions and physical output. Former Southampton assistant coach Simon Rusk highlighted Fernandes’ rapid learning curve and adaptability, noting that his desire to be involved in every aspect of the game has made him a central strength in his midfield play.
The transfer fee reflects the inflated market for "engine room" midfielders in the Premier League, with recent high-profile signings such as Declan Rice, Moisés Caicedo, and Enzo Fernández setting new benchmarks.
